The cooling system’s job is to keep the engine at an optimal operating temperature, around 94°C (200°F). A pump circulates the liquid coolant, which is made up of water and antifreeze. This pressurized liquid absorbs the heat from the engine and is then cooled in the radiator. Parts such as the thermostat, pressure cap, and hoses complete the system.
Since the cooling system is subjected to high temperatures in extremely rigorous conditions, it should be inspected regularly by a certified NAPA AUTOPRO technician. The smallest leak can decrease the amount of liquid coolant to below a safe level, which may create harmful conditions for the engine. If the vehicle has a temperature gauge, the needle will hit the red zone to warn the driver. If the Check Engine light comes on, there’s already a risk of damage.
The cooling system should be inspected and the coolant replaced on a regular basis. Failing to change the coolant can cause the system to clog, which raises the internal engine temperature.
